About 200 people from politics, science and business were invited to Berlin on November 29,2017, in order to get a glimpse into the laboratories of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft on the subject of artificial intelligence (KI) in the capital’s representative office. The aim was to give the invited public the opportunity to experience and discuss the opportunities and risks of this cross-sectional technology with researchers.
Responsible organizer and host Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel was honored as a pioneer due to his many years of research activities in the field of artificial intelligence. He is director of the Fraunhofer Institut for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS at the Campus Schloss Birlinghoven near Bonn, chairman of the Fraunhofer Alliance Big Data and mentor of the first hour at Implisense.
In the exhibition, institutes of the Fraunhofer Alliance for Big Data presented their works, which impressively demonstrated new application possibilities of KI processes. As alumni of the Fraunhofer IAIS Dr. Andreas Schäfer, Dr. André Bergholz und Hannes Korte from Implisense were invited.
Among the many topics of the event we found this remarkable:
- Affective Computing
In this area, institutes are researching to derive the emotions of filmed people in real time from video images. It was exciting to see how quickly and precisely these methods work and what advantages Deep Learning brings.
- Internet of Senses
Here, an institute works interdisciplinary on “smelling” machines in order to apply principles of coordination and navigation of ant trunks in the search for food, e. g. in logistics. The feedback in the plenary session already made quite clear that completely new use cases are possible in various areas.
- Automatic evaluation of business reports
Our former colleagues at Fraunhofer IAIS and a large provider of business information are developing an engine for the automatic evaluation of business reports. Both the extraction of relevant facts and the automatic assessment of qualitative statements on business development dramatically reduce the manual effort required to date. They thus form the basis for new business services.
- Graph-based Chatbots
Graph-based allows more complex queries with accurate results instead of full-text search results in large amounts of data.
Our summary of the event
A successful event with a clear potential for repetition. In view of the interest shown by the audience and the dynamics in the area of KI, we would not be surprised if a similar event were to take place again next year. It was overdue for KI research institutions to open up and engage in dialogue on opportunities and risks.
